White Washing Red Brick with Hydrated Line

Look how whitewashing brick gives this house in Lake Jackson, TX a modern transformation. Painting exterior brick white is increasing in popularity. White brick is a modern look that elevates the curb appeal of the home.

Applying regular latex exterior paint is certainly a valid option for painting brick. Our customer decided for the more traditional application of whitewashing with hydrated lime. Whitewashing with a lime slurry has been around for thousands of years. Actually used by ancient Egypt and Rome to paint monuments white!

We applied this old school limewash mixture by hand using mason brushes. Applying the limewash by hand adds a nice texture and aged look.

If you are interested in learning how we made our whitewash mixture we pretty much followed the recipe from This Old House. We used a mixture of 80% hydrated lime; 20% white portland cement, mixed with water to the consistency of paint. Applied the slurry with a masonry brush. Voila!
