Water was leaking from the bottom of my toilet, and I only figured it out because my pants were soaked when I stood up. I know, super gross, but hear me out. You’re probably asking, “What does a leaky toilet have to do with house painting?” I promise, my friend, I’m going to connect those dots.

About a year ago, we were waist-deep in remodeling the new house, and one of the tasks was replacing a broken old toilet.

Now, putting in a new toilet seems pretty straightforward, right?

I consider myself a pretty handy guy. I’d even done it a couple of times before. I even watched a quick YouTube video to refresh my memory, so I felt totally prepared to install the new one. And to be fair to myself, the toilet worked fine for almost an entire year—until that slow, dirty leak started creeping out from the base.

Honestly, seeing that was seriously disheartening. I had the whole concept down; I’d done it before. Heck, I’d watched a pro do it on YouTube. This toilet should not be leaking!

Well, instead of repeating my past failures, I threw in the towel and called the professionals. I rang up my local trusted plumbing company, and they came out and fixed it today—all within about two hours of my initial call.

Yes, I had to shell out a little extra cash, and yes, they charged me plumber prices. I could have saved two hundred bucks by trying to DIY it again.

But here’s the thing: that $200 wasn’t just for a plumbing repair. That money bought me peace of mind knowing the job was done right. It bought me a company that understands all the annoying little nuances of the repair. It bought me professional service.

I asked the plumber what went wrong, fully expecting to be scolded. He told me two things: the seal was about 4% off center, and I had used the wrong type of seal to connect the toilet to the flange.
See? I knew all the big steps, but my mistake was in the tiny details. Not all seals are the same. I think I used the generic seal the toilet fixture supplier gave me when I bought the toilet, and that was the core issue.

The point I’m trying to make is that while I knew all the steps, I didn’t have the same depth of knowledge as a professional. I didn’t know ALL the small details. Knowing how to do something and having the expertise to execute it perfectly are two wildly different things

Bringing it Back to House Painting

That experience got me thinking about the industry I serve: house painting. Painting the inside and outside of a house is something a lot of people attempt. It can seem like an easy and maybe even a fun weekend project. Most people get the core concepts: mask the area, pour the paint, then brush and roll it onto the wall. Watch a 10-minute YouTube video, and you’re good to go.
Straightforward, right? A lot like me attempting to replace a toilet.

But the devil is in the details, and nothing is more detailed than painting.

So why hire a professional painter? Let me give you a few reasons:

  1. Depth of Knowledge: A professional knows exactly what paint to apply to what surface. They know the proper prep steps—the priming, the sanding, the specific conditions needed—to ensure your home looks its absolute best and the finish lasts. You can ask yourself, Is this paint compatible with the surface I’m painting. Just like there is no way I could have known that I had installed a toilet with the wrong flange.
  2. Convenience and Peace of Mind: Calling a pro should be convenient. While you’re at work or doing literally anything else, your home is being taken care of, and you don’t have to spend your weekend stressing over cut-lines and taping.
  3. Aesthetics & The Finish: I don’t mean to sound full of myself, but I’ve seen countless DIY paint jobs, and honestly? They usually don’t look great. It’s nearly impossible to get the same results as a trained painter who applies paint every single day. Just like my toilet fail—I know the steps, but I’m definitely not a plumber, and I’ll never have the experience a licensed plumber has. A professional painter guarantees a professional finish.

So, what’s the big takeaway from all this dirty water drama?

Well, aside from the fact that I now have a very specific fear of wet socks, it’s this: knowing how to do something and having the expertise to execute it perfectly are two wildly different things. I’m great at following a YouTube tutorial, but I’m not a plumber. That’s the same reason you hire a pro painter. You don’t want to find out a year from now that the wrong paint choice caused mold to grow on your exterior walls, leading to peeling paint and a wasted weekend. Invest in the right expert, avoid the surprise mistakes, and keep your walls looking fantastic.
